Located in the northern region of Lake County, Indiana lies the quiet and historic city of Gary. Originally founded in 1906, the area was established as a new plant site for the United States Steel Corporation. Over the course of 15 years the new steel plant, known as Gary Works provided the area with an instant boost in the economy, population, and community development. By 1930, the population of Gary, IN had exceeded 100,000 people with many workers and immigrants moving to the area in seek of work and opportunity in the booming steel industry. Unfortunately, like many of the rust belt cities across the Northeast United States, the fortunes of Gary have fallen with the threat of overseas competition. To counteract this trend, the city has continued to make strides in the commercial and recreational sector. Today, the population of Gary rests at around 74,000 people with many residing within the city limits due to the development of the downtown area. While the city has seen its share of economic hardships and employment issues, the community remains a wonderful place to live.
